Welcome It doesn’t seem so long ago that we were all close to expiring in the long summer heat wave and now, lo and behold, we bring you two pages of Christmas book offers. If, unlike me, you are already planning your yuletide gifts I urge you to take a look. Many of the books – including Victor Chinnery’s seminal work on oak furniture and Harry Lyons’ terrific book of the textiles of Christopher Dresser, have previously appeared in the magazine – and all are being offered at a 40 per cent discount. Turn to pages 20-21 for more details of what’s on offer. Andy McConnell is one of the Antiques Roadshow’s more colourful characters (a title much fought over). What he doesn’t know about glass is not really worth knowing. Aside from his appearances on everyone’s favourite Sunday evening programme, he runs a glass shop in Rye and has just finished a 500-page magnum opus on decanters. 20 years in the making, it is published next month by ACC Art Books (we have an offer on this, too, see page 18). Just as he approached the book’s deadline, Andy came across an American glass designer who blew his socks off. Too late to be included in his book, Andy wrote about him exclusively for us, see page 14. I hope you like the piece – and the glass – as much as I do. Traditionally, October has always been our ‘art’ issue, so expect plenty of it in this month’s mag – including, on page 28, a guide to collecting the work of James McNeill Whistler (which is more affordable than you might think), as well as an article on the history of prints from the 16th century to today (page 32). In lighter mood, on page 50, Paul Fraser considers the collecting market for spy ware. If you’ve ever wanted to surveille a spouse by taking pictures of them on a camera disguised in a packet of Lucky Stripe cigarettes (and who hasn’t?) then this is the article for you. Enjoy the issue. GeorginaGeorgina Wroe, Editor KEEP IN TOUCH Write to us at Sandy Lane, Old Martlesham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP12 4SD, or email magazine@accartbooks.com.
