INTERPRETATION
Community Programs department (ECP) began a three-year initiative called Raising Creative Kids, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which aimed at offering families holistic, playful and informal experiences. Increasingly, audiences desired experiences that were self-guided and allowed them to explore the collection at their own pace and not just on days which offered family-specific programming. In an effort to meet this need, ECP revamped its hands-on activities, called WAC Pack, as well as workshops based on the concept of teaching parents tips and tools that museum educators use in the galleries.
The WAC Pack, developed by ECP in 2000, contained several different activities, which tended to be informational and required a great deal of reading. The focus of the new WAC Pack was to facilitate an experience for families in the galleries, and concentrate less on artist biographies, material choices and influences. Additionally, we were hoping to appeal to diverse interests and learning styles while keeping the actual number of variations in the packs to a minimum.
