A Queen Anne Boudoir
One of the Perfect Rooms at the Ideal Home Exhibition
A QUEEN ANNE BOUDOIR- room so reminiscent of the period that one might almost hear Lady Teazle and the fashionable coterie that surrounded her in the 18th Century, indulging in their gossip and scandal. Such a room did Lady Speyer design and decorate for the Ideal Home Exhibition as illustrated above.
Lady Speyer's treatment of this room shows marked individuality and sympathetic appreciation of this delightful period of decorative art. The antique furniture from her own collection is arranged with great taste and judgment.
The panelling of the walls is painted in the characteristic duck-egg green, the carpet being a plain powder-blue Wilton, on which is a wonderful silk Persian rug. Figured damask curtains furnish the tall casement windows, which, at Olympia, opened into an old English garden. A magnificent red lac cabinet is against the wall on the left, on a massive and elaborately carved gilt stand. The furniture is English walnut, the high-backed chairs being upholstered in petit point. There is all the paraphernalia of a Boudoir-a harp, a little work-table and writing bureau. The small clock on the mantelpiece in the early days of the 18th Century ticked out the long hours during which my lady worked diligently at her embroidery; yet thinking, perhaps, of her new flowered stomacher, or a pair of those slippers with green lace and blue heels of which it was said that " they do create irregular thoughts in the youth of this nation "!
In furnishing a " Period room it is not sufficient merely to fill it with the proper furniture. Something of the spirit of age it represents must be caught, something of its special attributes and the social qualities of those for whom the mode was originated. The Waring & Gillow designers and decorators are par excellence in conveying this atmosphere. One may say that rooms have temperaments; to create the temperament as well as the correct appearance of this Queen Anne Boudoir has been their aim.
