Introduction

ITH THIS title it is proposed te introduce a new series of articles dealing with the modelling of the New Zealand Ruilways in all its aspeets. However, ~~ model railway is too much of a personel expression of onots ambitions, ideas, requirements a limites tions for a specific dugizgn to be submitted that is capable of univers] acoption or that would prove universally populer; so it ts intend:d that this series should give th: model railwsymen following New Zealand prototypes ideas, suggestions end methods of obtaining that clusive and reulistic atmos-— phere whereby our model railway system cvasus to be a "model" and becomes a railway in miniature. These articles sre also intended to form the basis of a manual of construction snd operation for the beginner; it is proposed to cover tho following subjects in the order shown:-

1, Type of layout. ii. Signals. 2. Survey. 12, Reilscape and scenery. 3. Baseboard. 13. Station buildings. 4, Trackwork. 14. Other railway buildings end structures. 5. Turnouts. 16, Roads. 6, Yards. 16. Tons, shops and stores. 7. Bridgis. 17. Fouses, ete. 8. Tunnels. 18. Factories«nd industrics. 9. Floetricity. 19, Trees, woods, hedges, ste. 10. Gontrol. 20. Operation.

Put before we really get sturted lut us consider the questions of scel: and gauge. Th. tirm "sealc" indicates the proportionate size of th. model in reletion to th. sia. of the prototype, while "gauge" designates the distanc: between th: rails, and this hears -s. definite relstionship to scale. Surprisingly, it is not the spac: evailable that should be the determining factor in the choice of sesle and gauge. Railway modclling is goenorally + combination of a wide vuriety of skills hence one's abiliticvs and desircs end, of course, pocket book, shculd also be considered b: fore making choice,
